Class 1 : Abs and Pads Monday 6pm-7pm
Abs and Pads is very good. It consists of around 45 mins of boxing based circuits. Followed by/inter spaced with around 10 mins of abdominals. Watch out for the 2 minute burn-out (one minute continuous punching with each arm.) The fitness suite is well stocked with 2 heavy bags and ample boxing pads. I would advise you bring your own gloves (available for a tenner from sports direct.)
Class 2 : Circuit Training Wednesday 6pm-7pm
Classic circuits. 2 rounds of around 14 stations. 1 minute 30 on each station with 30 seconds rest. Stations are varied to keep you on your toes. Were as abs and pads has a upper body bais, circuits is balanced and will have you using all you muscles even some you didn't even know you had.
Classes are at central fitness in St Helens town centre (in the old YMCA building), and cost £2 for Go Active members or £3 for non members. Classes start at 6 so you'll need to be changed and ready.
Classes are delivered by Joe the man behind such blogs entries as First Experience with a personal trainer and Personal Trainer : Welcome to The Hurt Locker! While the classes are not as hardcore as the personal training sessions, these blog posts will give you some idea about what to expect.
I can personnally recommend both classes.

Personal Trainer Week 4
I made it! I survived four weeks. At times I didn't think I would, at others I kind of hoped I wouldn't, but I did it.
This week just to make it that bit more thoroughly exhausting, Joe suggested I do his "Pads and Abs" Class on Monday. This making it three nights in a row. Stupidly I agreed that this did indeed sound like a good way to begin my week. Not such a good idea when abs exercises somehow were hurting my hamstring.
Suitable stretched and warmed up we continued to Tuesday's personal class. In which I did the dreaded rowing intervals.....twice. Plenty of kettlebells and weights. I left tired, hungry, aching and wondering how I would survive circuits the next day.
Wednesday circuits. My arms were heavy, my legs tired and my get up and go had got up and gone. It was an hour of sweat and pain. One hour later however, I stood triumphant.........well leaned triumphant......leaned and tried not to fall down.

Kettlebell Workout.
Anne asked for details about the Kettle Bell workout, that Cath got a while ago. So here it is. Along with said Kettlebells.
It comes highly recommended. I’ve watched it and it looks very good and it even gives you “options” if you’re not up to the full workout yet. As with all these DVDs do as much as you can, and try not to collapse in a heap on the floor.
Cath recommends starting with the 6kg, with the 4kg as "arrggghh my arms are going to drop off" back up. Than working your way up.

Personal Trainer : Welcome to The Hurt Locker!
Its week three of my experiment with personal training. On the whole i'm really enjoying it, but boy does it hurt.
Every time I think I've got a hang of it Joe knocks it up several notches. This week he had me running up 4 flights of stairs, in pyramid sets. Followed by a 30 minute none stop weights workout. After which was a good 30 minutes deciding if i needed to go to the hospital or not. What's more Joe signed me up for his circuit training to. Which has left Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings, to be time spent in the Hurt Locker. Cath and Drill Sergeant Bailey have got the place nice, they've been coming here for sometime now. I hope to be able to walk soon, at the very least to be able to get to work in the next hour or so.
Wish me luck.

First Experience with a personal trainer.
Its Wednesday its 5 o'clock, and I ache. Not “oh I can feel my muscles after that work out”, I ache with the fire of a thousand suns and I ache in places I didn't know existed. The worst thing is I feel really good about it. The reason you ask, I stupidly signed up for 4 one hour sessions with Joe my gyms personal trainer.
Just a bit of background I've recently been taking my gym work to the next level, in the hope that I can reach my target weight by the time I'm 30 (in 14 months time.) I've been doing well but I felt I'd started to plateau a little. I added swimming in October and that really helped. That's when I decided I needed some more help to get the most out of my gym sessions. I put some Christmas money aside, and made an appointment with Joe.
Its Monday is 6 o'clock and Joe is starting me off with interval training on the rower..... Its now 6.30 I'm using kettle bells and I'm pretty sure I'm dying...Its 7 o'clock and I feel good, I can't lift my arms above my shoulders and I'm still not overly convinced I'll survive the night but I feel good.
Joe was very good he pushes enough, not like a drill Sergeant but just right (for me anyway.) I felt more tired after that hour than I ever have after my usual 2 hour sessions. Sucker for punishment that I am(i have done an hour and a half in the gym tonight.), I'm even looking forward to next week. If I stop aching by than, that is.
